Je suis ce que Je suis (2018) is an experimental narrative addressing identity and societal perceptions. It delves into the unconscious roles we assign based on ethnicity, influenced by media-propagated stereotypes. This cultural conditioning often compels individuals to craft distinct personas for public and private spheres. Drawing from Ralph Ellison’s "Invisible Man", the film integrates the quote "I am what I am" in English, French, and Haitian Creole, set against the music of Bach and Telemann. This trilingual representation echoes languages from my childhood in Jamaica and Haiti, underscoring the multifaceted nature of identity. |
