the paper bag test: white noise (2012- ) is a painting series on the perception of standardized ideas of beauty within Diaspora communities. Colorism is the implicit protagonist of this story told in paintings and drawings, which is meant as a satire on the preference for lighter skin tones as being more beautiful in many Diaspora communities. This idea of beauty is prevalent amongst Diaspora groups who lived under European imperialism and internalized unspoken hierarchies of skin tone as a way to survive in these societies. As a result, people ended up discriminating within their very own ethnic groups and believing that those individuals fare better whose appearance reproduces Western ideals of beauty. |
