Media: rabbit skin glue, synthetic water-soluble polyvinyl acetate emulsion, dry paint pigment for both the egg tempera, encaustic and oil paint. Paper Bag Test Portraits (2011-2022) is a striking series painted on brown paper bags, challenging beauty norms in global Diaspora communities. Drawing from the historical "brown paper bag test" in the U.S., which tied privileges to skin tone lighter than a paper bag, this series highlights the persistent issue of colorism. The use of paper bags as canvas emphasizes the need to confront and uproot such harmful ideals in the remnants of colonialism. This art is an urgent call to action against entrenched color-based prejudices. |
