Paper Bag Test Testimonials (2014- 4:50 min) is an immersive multimedia installation that critically examines the pervasive issue of colorism within society. Through documentary-style videos, this project brings to light the deeply entrenched biases and inequalities associated with skin tone. The installation features a series of intimate interviews with individuals who share their personal experiences and reflections on how colorism has shaped their lives. These testimonials serve as a powerful narrative, revealing the subtle and overt ways in which skin tone continues to influence social dynamics, opportunities, and self-perception.

The installation is designed not just as a space for observation but as an active forum for dialogue. By presenting these stories in an engaging, multimedia format, Paper Bag Test Testimonials encourages viewers to confront their own assumptions and biases related to colorism. The project’s interactive elements invite participants to contribute their thoughts and experiences, fostering a deeper, collective understanding of the issues at hand. This engagement is crucial in deconstructing the systemic nature of color-based discrimination and in highlighting the ongoing struggles faced by marginalized communities.

At its core, Paper Bag Test Testimonials is a call to action. It amplifies the voices of those who have been historically silenced or overlooked due to the color of their skin, challenging audiences to reflect on the social constructs that perpetuate inequality. By creating a space for these conversations, the installation not only brings awareness to the issue of colorism but also inspires viewers to take part in the movement toward a more just and equitable society. This work ultimately asks us to envision a future where skin tone no longer dictates one’s value or opportunities, urging us to actively participate in the dismantling of these harmful hierarchies.
